Oluwatosin Ayoyinka Olumide "Tosin" Abasi (born January 7, 1983), is an American musician, best known as the founder and lead guitarist of the instrumental progressive metal band Animals as Leaders. He has recorded and released five albums with Animals as Leaders: a self-titled debut, Weightless, The Joy of Motion, The Madness of Many, and their most recent album, Parrhesia. A widely recognized guitar virtuoso, Abasi was ranked #97 on the Guitar World list of 100 Greatest Guitarists of all time; he is known for his "avant garde" work with extended-range and non-traditional guitars and blending an eclectic set of techniques and motifs, especially from jazz fusion, djent, classical guitar works, and, naturally, progressive metal, which is certainly at least in part influenced by band-mate Javier Reyes, a flamenco guitarist by training. Notably, Abasi is credited as the creator of "selective picking" – which involves a "hammer-on" followed by a group of up- and down-strokes with a plectrum, allowing for extended groupings and a more percussive timbre, especially with split-coil humbucking/ single-coil pickups – and the increasingly popular "thumping," an amended adaptation of the ubiquitous electric bass guitar technique slapping used heavily throughout his discography.
